Individual Factors

We all come in different shapes and sizes. It is in the best interests of the business to cater for these individual needs as it will increase productivity and reduce the risk of error and injury. Managing these individual factors is a two-way responsibility. This involves the business making sure the workplace fits the worker (Ergonomics) but also that the worker's capabilities fit the task he/she is required to do.

Part of the process of ensuring that the worker fits the tasks is about good recruiting. Physical capacity can be assessed through Functional Capacity Evaluation. Whether or not their personality and their skill set fits with your business is a part of the more traditional interview process. Once the person is on the job, there is then the on-going process of performance monitoring and management, further education and training, and the provision of the appropriate evel of support. Most good businesses already do all these things.

What most businesses don't do is any kind of health monitoring or any kind of wellbeing programs. And this is where Safe Hands can provide some help in partnership with other health care providers.

Some exmples of programs that have proven to be both successful and cost effective include annual health screening conducted by the worker's GP, annual discomfort survey mapping, healthy workplce programs, and social activity programs.

Areas where we at Safe Hands can help have been outlined in our Staff Wellness programs.

Personal Responsibility

When it comes to managing Safety, the most frequent breakdown is Individual behaviour, or Human Error.

Mistakes happen. But they happen for a reason. The triggers for these errors may be environmental, or they may be more due to the individual.

While most behaviour can be managed, that can be difficult, tiring, and time consuming. It is better to promote personal responsibility through positive reinforcement and a productive workplace culture. Looking after workers, providing support and education, and rewarding positive behaviour is the way to achieve these outcomes.

Its about enabling personal responsibility by making it part of the business' responsibility.
